Last year Maxima Latvija implemented a range of measures to support the Latvian public during the virus outbreak. The company has donated 230,000 items of fresh produce and packaged groceries worth 150,000 Euro to six charity organisations. In addition, the company prepared 25,000 food packages to support RAKUS and BKUS medical personnel.
“In 2020, with the impact of COVID-19 on the economy in mind, we adapted our development strategy to concentrate on community support, which was so necessary for many of Latvia’s inhabitants. This support involved not just ensuring our prices were low so that people could purchase healthy food with limited finances, but also practical help: donating products to charity organisations and meals to medics to ensure that they had the strength to care for their patients. This coming year will be no exception; we will continue to lower our prices for an even wider range of high-quality products, and we will also continue to donate to a range of organisations,” explains Jānis Vanags, Corporate Manager at Maxima Latvija.
For the benefit of society, Maxima Latvija has been an active supporter of the Children's Clinical University Hospital, the Riga East University Hospital, Hospiss LV, and many other charity organisations including the Samaritan Association of Latvia, Via Veritas, AGAPE, Brāļu Draudze, Dzīvības Ēdiens and PINS.
In 2020, 200,000 kilograms of food products worth more than 150,000 Euro were donated from Maxima stores both in Riga and elsewhere in Latvia, including Liepāja, Madona, Jelgava and Ogre. The company also donated fresh produce (fruit, vegetables and meat) worth 10,000 Euro to the Galds Savējiem campaign, in addition to supporting other causes such as senior organisations, children’s homes and organisations supporting large families with 30,000 Euro worth of products. Meanwhile, to reduce food waste, almost two tonnes of non-standard fruits and vegetables that came into Maxima stores were donated to Riga Zoo to feed the animals.
Since the company first opened, products reaching their expiration date have been discounted and placed on a special lower-price shelf so that products are used responsibly and people are able to purchase high-quality, edible products at lower prices.
