Maxima Achieves Record Contactless Payments of Over 100,000 Daily

January 07, 2021

To improve shopper safety, Maxima stores throughout Latvia achieved a significant increase in payments using both contactless tools (NFC) and self-service checkouts in December. More than 100,000 customers daily made their payment using contactless tools this December, while 44% of all purchases were made at self-service checkouts in the stores where these have been installed.

“The past year has triggered a range of changes and improvements in our stores to ensure that our customers can shop safely, quickly and conveniently, at the same time making our work easier and more efficient. We have paid particular attention to installing technologies into both smaller and larger stores, which is particularly appreciated by our customers in the capital and elsewhere. Over the past month, we have seen that around 51% of Maxima XXX store customers use self-service checkouts, reaching up to 60% in some stores. We also see that more than 100,000 customers made contactless payments right before the weekend in which stricter retail restrictions came into force. This payment method is very fast, making the time spent in the store shorter,” explains Gunita Ķiesnere, Director of the Maxima Latvija Retail Department.

Over the past year, Maxima has expanded its self-service checkout network throughout Latvia, with the total number of checkouts reaching 519. Statistics show that customers of the Maxima on Riga’s Brīvības Gatve use these checkouts the most, at 59.1%, while outside of Riga, the most active customers are at Liepāja’s Maxima XX store at 62 Klaipēdas Street.  Most customers using self-service checkouts, around 72%, pay by card.

It has already been announced that there was a particular surge in technological advances at Maxima Latvija last year, as the company developed its existing systems such as its self-service checkout network, while also implementing new solutions such as its mobile app and the Scan&Go tool, which allows customers to scan their own products before paying in either a special zone or at the self-service checkouts (currently available at the Maxima XXX store in Akropole shopping centre). In 2021, the company will continue to aim its development at improving customer experience, facilities and employee well-being.
