Continuing expansion, Maxima to Open 2 More New Stores

August 03, 2020

In addition to the 11 stores already unveiled this year, Maxima Latvija plans on opening two more new stores in Riga in the second half of this year for the benefit of its employees and the convenience of customers. This year, four new stores in Riga, Bauska and Daugavpils, as well as seven reconstructed stores in Riga, Limbaži, Rēzekne, Gulbene, Jūrmala and Liepāja, have opened their doors to customers, offering high quality products at low prices. This year, the company plans on investing up to 34 million Euro in store network development and growth, creating more than 300 new jobs and supporting Latvia’s economic recovery.

In 2020, as part of the development of its network of residential-area stores throughout Latvia, Maxima Latvija plans on both opening 13 new and renovated stores in Riga and elsewhere. Right now, as it is still crucial to adhere to measures reducing the spread of COVID-19, the opening of the new stores offers greater distancing possibilities by reducing customer flow and concentration of crowds in one location.

“For us, the Maxima Latvija team, it is important to offer support to people, which is why the company continues to invest in expanding the store chain every year. Therefore, we not only make shopping more convenient for our customers, improve the store environment and revitalising local communities, but also allocate a significant proportion of the investments to equip the stores with modern, sustainable solutions to protect the environment while at the same time creating new jobs. We are pleased that we can support other struggling industries, such as construction and local producers, with our construction of new stores and modernisation of existing ones, promoting the recovery of the Latvian economy in this difficult time,” emphasises Maxima Latvija CEO Viktors Troicins.

The well-planned investments include spending on the latest technologies, digital tools and more efficient processes both to improve the customer shopping experience and make the day to day operations easier for employees. For example, for customer convenience, self-service checkout zones are being expanded, and digital scanners and price tags are being installed. In both larger and more local stores, the range of food-to-go is being expanded, and other modern innovations are being introduced.

This year, the most extensive store reconstruction investment—more than 11 million Euro—was made into the Maxima store at 20a Saharova Street, which went from a Maxima XX format to the eighth-largest Maxima XXX store. Meanwhile, with an investment of 8.2 million Euro, a completely new Maxima XX store was built in the Riga district of Mežaparks, at 1 Rusova Street. To ensure a pleasant shopping experience close to home, significant funds were invested in the reconstruction of the Maxima X store at 160A Deglava Street: 950,000 Euro.
