Local Fruit, Vegetable and Berry Consumption In Latvia Grow Significantly

April 26, 2019

Maxima Retail Compass survey statistics show that a quarter, or 25%, of Latvian residents admit that they daily try to buy more fruit and vegetables which is also confirmed by sales figures - in the first quarter of 2019, sales of fruit, vegetables and berries in Maxima stores grew by 28%.

Slightly more than 25% of Latvian residents are increasingly trying to buy more fruit and vegetables regularly, and, compared with the last quarter of 2018, the number of Latvians buying products grown in Latvia has increased, according to Maxima Retail Compass survey data. The age group most trying to include fruit and vegetables in their daily meal plans are young people aged between 18 and 24, with nearly 45% of respondents in this age group giving this answer. 23% of residents also indicated that they have lately been trying to buy healthier products, paying particular attention to ingredients and choosing products with lower levels of sugar and fat, as well as products which do not contain e-numbers and colouring.

Maxima Latvija supports different initiatives promoting healthy lifestyle to the society, as well as collaborate with local farmers, offering a wide assortment of local fruits and vegetables. Therefore we are truly pleased that our customer are selecting local products more often - sales of Latvian fruit, vegetables and berries are higher than total sales - sales of local goods are 28% higher than last year, while the total amount of products sold has grown by 11%. Of course, this would not be possible without our trustworthy partners, who are constantly thinking about how to offer local goods year-round,” explains Maxima Latvija Director of Purchasing Department Edvīns Lakstīgala.

“For several years now, we have been able to offer fresh produce grown in Latvia all year, but, of course, there is more variety from spring to autumn. Right now, the first spring products are available to shoppers in Maxima stores. The amount of produce we deliver to store chains throughout Latvia grows every year, giving us the chance to develop; it gives us satisfaction that Latvian shoppers have access to Latvian products,” says Director of the Baltijas dārzeņi cooperative Jānis Bušs.
